Marie, Community Legacy Project

Community Legacy

Community Legacy supports people from a range of backgrounds to improve their health and wellbeing, learn new skills, develop personal characteristics, achieve accredited qualifications and make positive life improvements through the renovation of empty properties throughout the local communities of South Wales.

Funded by the National Lottery Community Fund, the project supports the regeneration of our communities, reducing empty property numbers and positively impacting upon the effects of anti-social behaviour, crime, and vandalism. In doing so, the project supports people to learn new skills, develop a sense of community ownership and pride and make meaningful progression into employment or other positive ambitions.

“Everyone is very accepting, encouraging and I do not feel left out because of my confidence or my language barrier. Making friends and building my confidence was a big thing for me – I feel that I’ve made lots of new friends on the project and we all became one big family!”

Background

Marie took part in the Community Legacy Project in Glynneath during 2020. Referred by JCP Neath, Marie was interested in engaging with the project to reduce social isolation and meet new people in her local area. As she had a language barrier, Marie found it difficult to meet new people and struggled with a lack of confidence and self-esteem. The project provided her with the opportunity to meet like-minded people whilst learning new skills that could be used to maintain her own home.

Journey

Marie joined the project during September 2020 and was one of our most eager and happiest participants! Marie applied herself well to the project, learning a wide range of new practical skills that would support her ambitions to maintain her own home and start her own business.

Marie was an extremely likeable character, and quickly went about building her confidence and getting to know new people, something that was extremely important to her.

During the project, Marie was successful in achieving both the Level 3 Award in Emergency First Aid at Work and CITB Health & Safety Awareness qualifications, providing her with the necessary knowledge and confidence to pass her CSCS test.

Next Steps

Marie excelled during the project, with her new skills and increased confidence supporting her project expectations and future aspirations.
